Firestone Tire Performance Recap: Firestone engineers developed a new tread compound for Kentucky Speedway and it drew high praise for both its grip and durability. Constant side-by-side running tonight was evidence of the great grip allowing for multiple racing lines. The top 10 finishers each put 65 laps (97.5 miles) on their final set of Firehawks in a testament to their durability.
From Scott Dixon, #9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "Firestone brought a great tire that had great consistency and grip. We put an extra half stint on that final set of tires, and they held up fantastic. They definitely had the same balance the whole day and, on an oval like this, one that's pretty rough, to do a stint and then some without them going off at all is really good."
>From Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing: "What another incredible IndyCar Series finish tonight. Congratulations to Scott Dixon for tying the record for most wins in a season; this sure seems to be his year. This is the kind of night that makes us at Firestone quite proud. Our talented tire engineers and chemists came up with a new compound formula for this weekend that drew pretty much unanimous rave reviews in the paddock. The spec was designed to add grip while not sacrificing durability, and it did just that. To see all those drivers stop for a late splash of fuel and not even consider changing tires is the best affirmation we can receive for just how well the Firestone Firehawks were performing."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize is awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. This week's nominees are: Scott Dixon and his Target crew for a quick pit stop for fuel that put him in position to pass Helio Castroneves for the win; Vitor Meira for a pair of thread-the-needle passes, including one for the lead on lap 45; and Ryan Hunter-Reay for making a great save following tire-to-tire contact with Tony Kanaan and continuing to finish ninth. Fans can vote through Wednesday at www.indycar.com to determine the recipient, and the "Tire-ific" award winner will be named at the next event. Prior to tonight's race, Paul Tracy was named winner of the "Tire-ific" award from the July 26 race at Edmonton, for his pass of Oriol Servia at the finish line for fourth place.
