Kyle Busch rules out 2016 Indy 500 run, but it's still on his bucket list

Kyle Busch has ruled out racing in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, but initial support from his sponsors leaves him thinking he may yet run the event in the future.

Busch, the reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, raised speculation last month he might attempt the 500 this year when he posted a tweet in which he said, “Always said when I win a cup championship I'd give it thought.”

On Friday, Busch was asked if he decided to go through with it, who would be harder to convince – his wife, Samantha, team owner Joe Gibbs or his sponsors?

Without question, Busch said, the answer would be Gibbs.

However, he said he has found some unexpected early support from his sponsors.

“The sponsor aspect, they’ve actually shown some interest in it and that was kind of fun for me to hear that there might actually be an opportunity there if I continue my relationship with them from the Cup side to the IndyCar side,” Busch said at Bristol Motor Speedway.

“We have to work out all those details, and it’s certainly not going to happen for this year, but maybe in some future years, we’ll see what we can put together.”

Busch's wife not a fan of him running Indy

Busch said his wife will be tough, but she has said she will be supportive.

“Samantha is not necessarily a fan of it and I’ve talked to her about it a little bit,” he said. “She’s just like, ‘I’ll be there when the time comes, but don’t tell me.’ ”

Busch has won at Indianapolis in both the Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series while his brother Kurt successfully competed in the 2014 Indy 500, finishing sixth and earning Rookie of the Year honors for Andretti Autosport.
