The 2025 NTT IndyCar Series season opener welcomed a relaxed and happier Michael Andretti, who was in St. Petersburg to simply enjoy a race as a member of the public.
This comes after the Pennsylvania native stepped down from his operations role in Andretti Global after the bid he led to enter Formula 1 was rejected in early 2024.
"No headaches," he says happily in a discussion with the media at the track. "It's weird that I have no schedule. I'm not used to it, like, I don't know what to do."
In October 2024, Andretti surprised the industry as he confirmed his stepping down from the day-to-day operations of his family's business, Andretti Global.
In an open letter, he penned:
"Many of my best memories have come at the wheel of this organization, and I am so proud of what we have built. But decades of running flat out doesn’t come without sacrifice and, after much thought and reflection over the past several months, I came to the decision to take a step back.
"I’ve had a day-to-day operational role since even before I stepped out of the race car, and it’s time now to pass the baton to my partner and friend, Dan Towriss."

Andretti now holds an advisory role within the organisation. This means he can still visit the track alongside the team but with less of an emphasis on the short-term performance of the company that bears his family name. In other words, he can sit back and enjoy some good racing.
"I'm happy. Everybody is telling me I look happy. I didn't know I was that miserable when I was here before," Andretti admitted. "You're always tense. You're always thinking about what you've got to do next. Now it's not my problem. I'm enjoying it a lot. More than I expected."
The former racing driver is "excited about the opportunity to spend more time with my beautiful family, including my 10-year-old twins, embrace my new Nonno title and explore new things on a personal level and with my other businesses."
For a man who was "born a racer" and "never looked back," taking his foot of the pedal must be a real change of pace.
