Firestone Tire Performance Recap: Firestone Racing engineers brought an all-new tire specification for this event. The spec was based on results from testing at Richmond earlier this year. The tire was softer than the 2007 Milwaukee spec and was designed to give drivers slightly more grip.
From Ryan Briscoe, #6 Team Penske Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "The car was just magic today. We came through the field, and it felt so good. Some guys had a bit of a compromise. Some cars were good at the beginning of a stint. Mine was good throughout. My Firestone tires just got better and better as the race went on."
From Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing: "With picture-perfect weather this afternoon, 26 IndyCar Series cars around this one-mile oval was certainly a sight to see! If drivers, like Ryan Briscoe, had their car dialed in, they were able to make it look easy. For those who did not have their cars set up quite so well, it was definitely a difficult day. Firestone brought a new tire spec to this track. As it was designed to provide drivers with more grip, it was a little bit softer than last year's Milwaukee spec. While this contributed to additional marbles on the track, we feel that it was a step in the right direction. And remember that more cars on the track means more marbles, and the increased car count is definitely a good thing for the IndyCar Series and for Firestone Racing."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: This $10,000 prize will be awarded after each IndyCar Series race to the driver who best utilizes his or her Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. This week's nominees are: Oriol Servia, for passing the leader on the lap 10 restart to get back the lap he lost; Townsend Bell, for jumping from 21st to 10th on the first two laps of the race; and Ryan Briscoe, for holding off a determined Scott Dixon in the closing laps to take his first victory with Team Penske. Fans can vote this Monday-Wednesday on www.indycar.com to determine the recipient, and the "Tire-ific" award winner will be named at the next event - the Bombardier Lear Jet 550k at Texas Motor Speedway.
