Munoz applying Andretti Autosport knowledge to AJ Foyt’s team

Two-time Indy 500 runner-up Carlos Munoz is hoping his knowledge of how an ultra-strong car should feel around Indianapolis Motor Speedway can help steer AJ Foyt Racing toward a strong raceday setup for the Indy 500.

The Colombian said that the main complication in this plan is how different the Chevrolet aerokit is from the Honda he drove for the past four years, while racing for Andretti Autosport.

“We are not where we need to be right now,” he remarked. “I know the main focus is the race, not qualifying. It will be nice to be in the front rows, the Fast Nine, but I think we just need to focus on the race.

“We have a great group of engineers for this month, you know, like my race engineer Will [Phillips], and also Andy [Brown, who runs the third one-off Foyt car of Zach Veach]. So hopefully we just keep digging and finding a little bit more speed and at the same time a little bit better setup for traffic. It's getting closer and closer.

“I think the Chevy package [corner-] entry is quite sharp but you know, it Is what it is, and it's not going to change. But for sure the car feels different. We're trying to get closer to that feeling. But, yeah, we'll see. I think the Hondas are going to be really quick the whole month.

“Interesting stuff that Penske is doing to try to catch up the speed, but I think we have to concentrate on our program to make the car really good in traffic. I think we're getting there, like I said.

"I think when the car is good on traffic, it is a good qualifying car as well.”
