CARPENTER TO START EIGHTH AT NASHVILLE FOR VISION RACING
LEBANON, Tenn. - Vision Racing driver Ed Carpenter will start eighth for tomorrow night's Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville Superspeedway. It will be a new best start for Carpenter and Vision Racing at the 1.33-mile concrete oval in his fifth start there. Fellow teammate A.J. Foyt IV qualified in the 22nd position.
The top-10 starting position for Carpenter will be his fifth of the season with three of the previous four leading to top-10 finishes as well. Carpenter's four-lap average qualifying speed in the No. 20 Menards/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone machine was 202.735 mph.
In 2004 at Nashville, Carpenter started in the 21st spot and fell victim to an accident; leaving him in 22nd driving with Cheever Racing. In 2005 he scored his best finish of the season with Vision Racing when he started from the 22nd position and drove to the 10th spot. Carpenter followed that up with another 10th place finish in 2006 as well, after starting 14th. Last year Carpenter started 13th, but had a running finish in 14th due to an airjack failure in the pits on lap 153.
Vying for his third top-10 finish at Nashville, Carpenter is currently 11th in the point standings after dropping one spot last weekend following the race at Watkins Glen.
Foyt was understandably unhappy with his four-lap qualifying average of 199.841 mph in the No. 2 Lilly Diabetes/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone car. Foyt is looking for his first top-10 finish at Nashville and his fifth running finish in a row at the track.
He has four previous IndyCar Series attempts at Nashville; the first three with A.J. Foyt Enterprises and one last year for Vision Racing. He has been running at the finish in all four affairs with his best result coming in 2005 and 2007when he took 12th, after starting 20th and 11th, respectively. In 2003 he started 16th and finished 17th and in 2004 he started 22nd and drove to 16th.
His abbreviated race and 19th place finish last weekend at Watkins Glen dropped him three spots to the 17th in the championship point standings with a total of 177 points. Tomorrow night he will be looking to score his fourth top-10 finish this year.
Fellow partners Lilly and CardioChek will also join the team at Nashville for the Vision Racing Wellness Tour, which allows race fans to stop by a mobile marketing unit for an opportunity to receive free cholesterol screenings and diabetes education. The complimentary cholesterol screenings and diabetes information will be made available at the track on Saturday, July 12 from 3 to 7 pm in the new Vision Racing Wellness Tour Mobile Marketing Unit.
A.J. Foyt IV - No. 2 Lilly Diabetes/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We're not down on car speed. We're down on power. This is the same engine that we had in Texas that seemed to have a problem as we weren't able qualify as expected. It was sent to Honda to be dyno-ed but they didn't find an issue with it. This is the first time we put it back in the car and it appears to still have an issue. The No.2 Lilly car has the exact same set up as the No.20 Menards car that qualified eighth and we're four miles an hour off the pace so it would appear that there is still an issue to resolve, but one only Honda can address, otherwise it looks like we are in for a long evening."
Ed Carpenter - No. 20 Menards/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"Our qualifying effort wasn't half bad. It was pretty much where we expected to be as we were running in the Top-10 on the speed charts in every practice. We were hoping to qualify fairly well. My last two laps were a lot better than my first two laps. I'd have liked to have gotten a better start to the qualifying laps to finish even higher on the charts but either way, it's the best start we've had here at Nashville so we're looking forward to a good race here on Saturday night for the No.20 Menards car and the Vision Team."
