FOYT QUALIFIES EIGHTH; CARPENTER 13TH FOR VISION RACING AT RICHMOND
RICHMOND, Virginia - Vision Racing drivers A.J. Foyt IV and Ed Carpenter will start eighth and 13th, respectively for tomorrow night's SunTrust Indy Challenge at Richmond International Raceway.
The top-10 starting position marks Foyt's best starting spot at Richmond in what will be his fifth attempt on the ¾ -mile oval. His four-lap qualifying average speed was 166.126 mph.
This comes on the heels of Foyt's great run last weekend at Iowa Speedway when he and the No. 2 Lilly Diabetes/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone machine started 18th and charged all the way to a fifth place finish.
Foyt has four previous attempts at Richmond; one start last year with Vision Racing and the other three with A.J. Foyt Racing. In his debut to the oval in 2003 he started and finished 21st due an accident. The next two years Foyt was running at the finish as he started 21st in 2004 and finished 11th and in 2005 he started 17th and finished 14th. Last year he started 17th and finished in the 13th spot.
He will be looking to earn his first top-10 finish at Richmond as well as log back-to-back top-five finishes on the season. Foyt is currently 13th (153 points) in the IndyCar Series championship point standings.
Starting from the 13th spot comes as a disappointment to teammate Ed Carpenter and the No. 20 Menards/Vision Racing Honda powered Dallara. However, in 2006 Carpenter started from the 13th spot and earned his best finish at Richmond in eighth so a repeat performance is well within reach. He qualified with a four-lap average speed of 164.963 mph.
Carpenter has four previous attempts at Richmond. In his debut at the track driving for Cheever Racing in 2004, he finished in the 16th spot due to an accident. In 2005 he finished 12th and last year Carpenter started 15th and finished 10th.
He is looking for his third consecutive top-10 finish at Richmond, his third top-five finish of the season and another chance to regain valuable spots in the point standings. As a result of his 23rd place finish at Iowa, Carpenter dropped two spots in the point standings to 10th (166 points).
Fellow partners Lilly and CardioChek will also join the team at Richmond for the Vision Racing Wellness Tour, which allows race fans to stop by a mobile marketing unit for an opportunity to receive free cholesterol screenings and diabetes education. The complimentary cholesterol screenings and diabetes information will be made available at the track on Saturday, June 28 from 4 to 8 pm in the new Vision Racing Wellness Tour Mobile Marketing Unit.
The 250-lap, 218.75-mile race at Richmond International Raceway gets started at 8:00 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN, as well as IMS Radio Network, XM IndyCar Series Racing Channel 145, XM Sports Nation Channel 144 and on the web at www.IndyCar.com.
A.J. Foyt IV - No. 2 Lilly Diabetes/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I'm happy with our qualifying after we were struggling quite a bit in practice today. The Lilly guys did a really great job making a bunch of changes and getting the car ready for qualifying. I'm happy for the team because we actually get a decent starting position for this race and that'll be important. I think we're finally getting a bit of luck turning our way here and every little bit helps. Qualifying later was definitely an advantage but we'll take it. It's good to have the Lilly car and the Menards car both in two solid starting positions."
Ed Carpenter - No. 20 Menards/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We've been kind of chasing it all day. It was in the same situation in Milwaukee when we really weren't happy with the car heading into qualifying so we made a lot of changes. We did a much better job of it today than we did in Milwaukee. The track cooled down quickly and guys qualifying later had an advantage, but I'm happy with our qualifying run. We were way quicker. All four laps were quicker than we have run all day in practice. It was a really nice improvement and the Menards crew did a really good job. I love this place which made it all the more disappointing early in practice when we found ourselves struggling. Qualifying is just so important here that I really just had to lay it out there and try to put in a good four laps."
