Practice was split into three separate groups with those who qualified 22nd - 33rd on Saturday out on track first. This allowed Max Chilton and Pippa Mann to get their first laps since crashing yesterday.
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports' Oriol Servia was quickest in the opening 30-minute session, leading both the tow (228.785mph) and no-tow (228.774mph) times. But he did not stay there.
There was a 15-minute intermission before the second group (those who qualified between 10th and 21st) were allowed out. Things really picked up with several heavy hitters putting up big laps. That includes Indy 500 rookie Alexander Rossi, who was knocked out of the Fast 9 in the final seconds by Mikhail Aleshin and led practice with an unassisted 230.064mph lap for Andretti Autosport.
Servia kept getting shoved down the speed charts and ended up eighth on the pylon. Behind Rossi, it was Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Dixon, Takuma Sato, Tony Kanaan, JR Hildebrand and Ed Carpenter overall.
Looking strictly at no-tow laps, it reads Rossi, Montoya, Dixon, Sato and Servia. The yellow flag waved moments before the conclusion of the practice with Scott Dixon appearing to have a mechanical issue of some kind.
Charlie Kimball ran the most laps of anyone at 20.
The fastest nine drivers then got their last chance to shake down their machines ahead of pole qualifying later this afternoon, but some of them opted not to participate. (Read report here).
