Schmidt Peterson withdraws Wickens’ car from Gateway race

The #6 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda, raced this year by Robert Wickens, will not be entered in this weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Gateway Motorsports Park.

Wickens suffered major injuries after a huge shunt at Pocono Raceway last weekend, and his car was written off.

Meanwhile, his teammate James Hinchcliffe also suffered minor injuries to his hands in the course of the same accident, having spun to avoid Wickens and been collected by Pietro Fittipaldi’s Dale Coyne Racing machine.

However, Hinchcliffe has been cleared to drive, although his car was badly damaged too.

The SPM statement read: “James Hinchcliffe, driver of the #5 Arrow Electronics Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda, who has been cleared to drive following an accident at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 19, will compete in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at Gateway Motorsports Park this weekend.

“The No. 6 Lucas Oil SPM Honda will not be entered for the event.”

Wickens underwent surgery last night on his spine, while today the medical focus was on remedial work to his legs and feet.
