St Petersburg's temporary street circuit next up for Justin
After last Saturday's oval race at Homestead-Miami, Justin returns to street racing at this weekend's Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg, Florida. The 1.8 mile, 14-turn, temporary street circuit will be new to Justin, having featured last as a Champ Car venue in 2003, the year before he joined that Series. However, Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing do have some limited experience to draw upon.
Justin's preparation for the race was to have included over three hours of track time at Sebring International Raceway yesterday, but rain ended the test prematurely after only 10 laps. Even so, Justin is excited about taking his #02 McDonald's Indy car onto a street circuit and seeing how the NHLR car performs.
"I am looking forward to driving on a street circuit and seeing how we stack up against everyone else," said Justin. "We're not going to be at the very front right away but hopefully we can be a little bit closer and work on our setup and have an enjoyable race and a stronger performance as far as lap times against the others. We should be closer to the pace and have a similar result to what we would do on a normal race weekend. We'll see how things work out."
The IndyCar Series has a new qualifying procedure for this and other road and street courses. There will be practice on Friday, and on Saturday there will be group sessions to progressively narrow the field to the fastest six, who will then enter a 10-minute shootout for the pole. "From what I have seen so far, it looks very similar to Formula One and should be entertaining for the fans and challenging for the drivers" said Justin.
