Justin qualifies 3rd for Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
Justin and Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing (NHLR) showed how quickly they have been able to adapt to the unified IndyCar Series by qualifying 3rd for Sunday's Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Justin has shown consistent pace around the Florida street circuit, topping the timesheets in the No. 02 McDonald's Dallara/Honda/Firestone machine during Friday morning's opening practice session and finishing the first day fourth fastest overall. During Saturday afternoon's three stage qualifying session, Justin was quickest in his group during Round 1 and fourth quickest in Round 2, allowing him to progress to Round 3, the Firestone Fast Six shootout for pole. He finished up third fastest in that final session (1:02.6426) behind polesitter Tony Kanaan (1:02.5322, Andretti Green Racing) and Will Power (1:02.6096, KV Racing Technology). Justin's NHLR team-mate Graham Rahal qualified 9th in the No. 06 Hole in the Wall Camps car.
Justin was pleased with the result, especially since the event is his and the team's first with the Indy car in street course configuration. "This weekend has been great so far for the McDonald's team", he said. "I'm glad to have made it through to the final six and I'm pretty pleased with third. I'd have liked to have gone a tenth quicker and got the pole position, but that's racing and Tony (Kanaan) obviously put a good lap in. We weren't expecting to be this competitive, but it's a dream come true considering what the team has been through in the last five weeks. I think generally we're just very pleased with the way the McDonald's car is handling and hopefully we can keep it up in the race tomorrow."
