RAPHAEL MATOS QUALIFIES 23RD AT IZOD INDYCAR FIRESTONE 550
Raphael Matos will start on the inside of row 12 after qualifying 23rd in the IZOD IndyCar Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Matos recorded a four-lap average of 212.327 in the rebuilt HP de Ferran Dragon car and will start along side of Ryan Hunter-Reay. Team Penske's Ryan Briscoe captured the pole.
"It's been a difficult week for the team putting the car back together, but they did an outstanding job in a very short period of time to get it ready for this race," Matos said. "We didn't have the speed to qualify well, but this is a track where you need a good racecar that can run well in traffic. We will work on the racecar tonight and hopefully get it sorted out."
The 13-person de Ferran Dragon crew turned in 463 man-hours in two-plus days in order to rebuild the #2 HP car following Matos' and teammate Davey Hamilton's accidents in the Indianapolis 500.
"Although we're not starting that high up we seem to have a well handling car that will hopefully allow us to climb higher in the race," de Ferran Dragon managing partner and president Gil de Ferran said. "Texas is always an unpredictable race and it's important to have a car that handles well in traffic. We seem to be doing pretty well on that count and hopefully that continues in the race tomorrow."
