Toronto IndyCar: Pagenaud leads Penske domination in FP3
With his 18th and final lap of the session, Simon Pagenaud nailed top time in morning practice here at Toronto, as six cars broke the 1-minute barrier around the 1.786-mile course, the top four of which were Team Penske-Chevrolets.

Pagenaud got held up on his earlier qualifying sim, but his second run did the job, a 59.7864sec, equated to 107.543mph, and lifted him half a tenth of a second ahead of Iowa-winning teammate Helio Castroenves.
Josef Newgarden was third, one-tenth behind Castroneves and seven-hundredths ahead of Will Power who completed the Penske 1-2-3-4 although he lost time with a trip into the Turn 3 escape road.
Ryan Hunter-Reay was fastest Honda driver in fifth for Andretti Autosport, with Graham Rahal’s Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing-Honda in sixth. Seventh and eighth for Alexander Rossi and Takuma Sato (who spun and stalled in a runoff area) backed up Hunter-Reay’s performance and indicated Andretti Autosport had made a setup breakthrough overnight.
Local hero James Hinchcliffe was ninth fastest for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda ahead of the impressive Carlos Munoz in the AJ Foyt Racing-Chevrolet.
Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda’s lead runner was Tony Kanaan in fifth, as last year’s polesitter Scott Dixon languished in 17th, just ahead of teammates Charlie Kimball and Max Chilton.
Sebastian Saavedra was an impressive 15th, in his only IndyCar outing this year aside from the Indy 500 venture with Juncos Racing. The 27-year-old Colombian, who has replaced Mikhail Aleshin in SPM’s #7 for this weekend, was only 0.83sec off top spot and under four-tenths slower than teammate Hinchcliffe.
JR Hildebrand’s session ended early after his Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolet made contact with a wall.
