Scott Dixon and the No. 9 Target Honda Team
Free 'Lamb' or 'Land' for Life? After winning the Indianapolis 500 Dixon was contacted by the New Zealand Lamb Cooperative, Inc. (NZLC) and awarded "free lamb for life." Dixon was thrilled when he heard the news after mistaking the gestures for "free land for life." This weekend representatives from the NZLC, including CEO Shane O'Hara, will travel to The Glen and prepare a special BBQ for Dixon and the team at the TCGR hospitality unit on Saturday after on-track activity. The menu will include: NZ beef and venison, NZ style sausages and NZ pavlovas for dessert.
First with Four: Dixon could become the first driver in open wheel history at WGI to score four consecutive wins. The only other open wheel driver to three-peat at the track was late Formula One champion Graham Hill at the United States Grand Prix in 1963-1965.
Lap Leader: The current top-three IndyCar championship points leaders Dixon, Wheldon and Castroneves are the only three drivers to lead laps in each of the past three IndyCar events at The Glen (2005--2007). Of the trio, Dixon leads with 57 laps, followed by Castroneves with 49 and Wheldon with 20. The No.9 and No.10 TCGR cars have combined to lead 71 of the total 175 laps run (40%) at the track.
Long time, No see: Dixon's three year reign at WGI began at 2005's inaugural event -- a victory which broke his 40-race winless streak since his last win at Richmond International Raceway in June 2003 -- the same year he claimed the IndyCar Series championship.
Mike Hull on The Glen: When asked what the secret formula is for Dixon's success at Watkins Glen, TCGR Managing Director Mike Hull pointed out, "I think one of the biggest reasons for (his) determination to win is the history that the track represents -- it makes everyone on the team work hard, as World Champions have won big races there. That provides special motivation for all of us to support both Scott and Dan."
Dan Wheldon and the No. 10 Target Honda Team
Tight Turnaround: TCGR Team Manager and No.10 race strategist, Barry Wanser shared his insight on how the team manages to change the cars from an oval to road-course setup for the third race in a span of seven consecutive race weekends. "The main differences are the suspension uprights and brake packages which we will put in the cars. And actually those parts were serviced after the St. Petersburg road course weekend so all we need to do is change out the parts. The biggest time saver in the whole equation is the fact that we came home from Richmond with two cars that were in one piece and avoided the mayhem on the track."
2005 in the Rear View: Wheldon's celebration at WGI's inaugural IndyCar event was quite different than his TCGR teammate. With a fifth place finish in the September 25th race, the Englishman clinched the 2005 IndyCar Series championship. Wheldon officially claimed the title on lap 31 of the 60-lap event.
