Winglet debris puts IndyCar race under caution one lap in

Debris has been scattered all over the track, yet, no major incident has taken place three cautions into the season opener.

Only one lap into the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season, there is a caution for debris.

Jack Hawksworth has lost part of his front wing assembly on the course and another driver might have lost a winglet off the front of the car on the front stretch.

This is not the first time debris has caused mayhem in IndyCar this weekend. Josef Newgarden lost a small flap on his right front wing in the morning Warmup before today’s race. Newgarden is running the race without the flicks on both side of the Chevy front wing.

The lack of spare parts has caused some teams to have stock DW-12 bodywork in the pits in case they need to switch their noses. There were at least three different pieces of large debris scattered around the track by the time the first lap was completed.

Such concerns over spare parts caused all teams to forego the second practice session on Friday because of the wet conditions.

More yellows

The second full-course caution flew at lap 26, once again for debris. There were four different spots on the track where pieces of cars were spotted. Soon after the race restarted, caution flew again as a large chunk of Andretti's wing was ripped off.

Four Honda wings have needed to be replaced so far, but none from Chevrolet. More debris has found its way onto the track, but officials seem more hesitant to throw the yellow now.
