Veach’s astonishing lap from this morning – a 201.455mph set on fresh tires and in a tow – kept him at the top by a comfortable margin. But the American and his Belardi Auto Racing teammate Felix Rosenqvist also remained strong in the afternoon session, with the reigning Euro Formula 3 champion prevailing on this occasion with a 198.051mph lap.
The lap records for the Dallara IL15-Mazda AER at Indianapolis Motor Speedway are Ethan Ringel’s 197.866 (one-lap) and 197.684 (two-lap qualifying average), while the record for a race lap is the 196.374mph lap turned by Felix Serralles last year.
Today’s third fastest speed came from Dalton Kellett of Andretti Autosport and was set in the more favorable morning session, a 197.713mph, with the first of the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports cars, that of RC Enerson, taking fourth.
Neil Alberico, who has struggled all year in comparison with his Carlin teammates Ed Jones and Felix Serralles, was today faster than either of them, grabbing a 197.330 lap in the tow-fest in the closing minutes.
Winner on the GP Indy course, Dean Stoneman was sixth quick for Andretti, while Kyle Kaiser was ironman of the day, turning a total of 95 laps for Juncos Racing, although he was only 13th in the combined timesheets. A total of 16 cars ran for a total of 1303 laps.
Indy Lights practice again for three hours on Thursday morning, with qualifying from 1.15pm. The Freedom 100, Indy Lights’ most prestigious race on the schedule, will start at 12.30pm on Friday.
