Yesterday Dan Wheldon recorded his third 'podium' result out of six races this season when he finished a close third in the sixth round of the 2001 CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship, which was held at the Indy Racing League meeting on the new 1.5 mile Kansas Speedway in the USA.
The 67-lap race was a typical Dayton Indy Lights superspeedway thriller with nose-to-tail drafting and three abreast racing.
Englishman Wheldon had started from fourth place on the grid in his PacWest Racing Gemstar Communications Lola-Buick and ran the whole race in the leading group. At the finish, Dan Wheldon was a mere .212 of a second behind the winner!
After the race, 23-year old Dan Wheldon commented: "We brought it home, and that's the main thing! I'm happy to have finished in the top three from a points standing. It's too bad my team-mate, Mario Dominguez, went out of the race early (with a misfire) because I think we could have worked together to make a charge. I did try to pair-up with Matt Holiday on the re-start, but we couldn't get the jump we needed to make things closer. I'm disappointed not to win, but we'll look forward to redeeming ourselves in Toronto next week."
Wheldon's third place at Kansas has consolidated his fifth position in the 2001 CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship. With half of this season's twelve races now run, the Championship is still remarkably close -- rookie Dan Wheldon (61 points) is only 21 points behind the current series leader, the more experienced Townsend Bell.
Dan Wheldon's next race is on the street circuit in Toronto on Sunday 15th July.
