Dan Wheldon started his first CART Dayton Indy Lights oval race from fifth position and stayed in the leading pack for the majority of the race, but it ended in disappointment for the 22-year old from England.
Wheldon, driving the Gemstar Communications Lola-Buick for PacWest Racing, had battled his way to third position until he had contact on lap 53 of the 67-lap race at Fort Worth's Texas Motor Speedway with Townsend Bell coming out of turn four while battling for second place. Up until then, the top five had frequently changed with the drivers running just inches apart.
The contact ended Wheldon's race, Dan walking away from the incident uninjured:'I was following closely and trying to stay low and I had a lot of understeer, which wasn't good,' said Wheldon. 'I brought the car high again, and the car began to run much better, but Townsend Bell and I got too close and my front wheel touched the back of his car and sent me into the wall. It's really a shame because we had such a good car and were in a good position to win the race.
'Wheldon's performance still netted him three more valuable points in the 2001 CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship, taking his total up to 30 and placing him 5thin the series after three of the twelve races. The next takes place in Wisconsin on Sunday 3rdJune.
