(Vancouver, Canada): PacWest Racing's Scott Dixon claimed provisional pole for the eighth round of the Dayton Indy Lights Championship at the Molson Indy in Vancouver, Canada today.
Dixon, driver of the #17 Invensys/Powerware PacWest Lights entry, struggled a little in morning practice, but the right adjustments were made before the official afternoon session and he clocked a time of 1:08.697 around the 1.802-mile temporary circuit.
The 20 year-old New Zealander is hoping he can keep his front-row place after tomorrow's final qualifying session and then produce a race result good enough to maintain his lead in the Dayton Indy Lights Championship.
Tony Renna, driver of the #18 Motorola PacWest Lights machine, clocked a time of 1:10.030 to put himself an impressive fourth on the provisional grid.
Renna, who suffered more bad luck than he deserved at the start of the season, will be chasing his fifth consecutive top-four finish on Sunday.
SCOTT DIXON - # 17 INVENSYS/POWERWARE PACWEST LIGHTS -- 1st
Qualifying time: 1:08.697s
"I am pleased with my car at this stage of the weekend," said Dixon.
"I have pretty good grip everywhere, but the track conditions change so frequently that it's making things a little tough.
"We did battle a slight understeer and can definitely tune a bit more overnight.
"Because of the changing conditions, we didn't get a lot of track time so I'm looking forward to Saturday to fine tune my car for the race."
TONY RENNA - # 18 MOTOROLA PACWEST LIGHTS -- 4th
Qualifying Time: 1:10.030s
"My car is pushing a lot so we do have some work to do overnight," said Renna.
"I'm not really getting the grip I need yet, and we still have a little tweaking to do with my gear ratios. I was hitting the limiter quite often in the corners.
"I'm happy with my fourth place position for Friday and will work on improving things tomorrow.
"We definitely have more speed in my car so I'm anxious to get out there tomorrow to improve my position.
