DORRICOTT RACING LOOKS TO KEEP MOMENTUM AT TORONTO
SONOMA, Calif. (July 14, 1998) - Hoping to build on the momentum of two top-10 finishes at Cleveland, Dorricott Racing and first-year Indy Lights drivers Philipp Peter, of Austria, and Oriol Servia, of Pals, Catalonia, Spain, are primed and ready to continue pressuring series front-runners and slip back into title contention during the second half of the Indy Lights season.
The 43-lap/74.003-mile Indy Lights race around 1.721-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit of Toronto's Exhibition Place is round nine of the 14-race series and scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET. This is the 13th consecutive appearance of CART's "Official Development Series" at Toronto since 1986, and is the featured support event for the CART FedEx Championship Molson Indy Toronto later that day.
Peter has displayed podium contending presence on road and street circuits throughout the year and Toronto isn't expected to be any different. His seventh place showing at Cleveland complemented fourth place at Long Beach in round two. Disappointing finishes at Detroit and Portland were beyond his control due to crashes he did not cause.
A first lap spin-and-stop by Naoki Hattori in turn three at Detroit blocked Peter's line and dropped him to 22nd place before he regained 12 positions to finish 10th. At Portland, Peter was blindsided by another driver prior to reaching the first turn on the race start. Peter was uninjured but his car exploded in flames.
"I'm feeling more comfortable on the street courses and I'm confident better results are nearby," said Peter. "We had a little problem getting the best car set-up for the roughness and bumps at Cleveland, but the team eventually figured it out and we should be even better prepared and more competitive at Toronto. If we can avoid bad luck and collect a few good breaks in qualifying, Toronto should be a good race for us."
Servia has become a force to reckon during qualifying sessions as evidenced by his outside poles at Cleveland and Nazareth. Combine those starts with second row grid positions at Milwaukee (third) and Portland (fourth), and strong finishes at Homestead (fourth), Detroit (sixth) and Cleveland (sixth), and Servia is regularly placing himself in position to seriously challenge for an Indy Lights victory at any given race. His 28 points and 13th place in the Indy Lights championship is deceiving.
"It's amazing to think we are only 13th in the points yet our overall track performance has been respectable," said Servia. "I know that competing for the championship is more than just going fast especially with so much to learn as a rookie. But what we have to do is match our race results with the success we have had in qualifying in order to move up in the standings."
Dorricott Racing is a year-round professional motorsports organization based at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Race results, team and sponsor information may be viewed on Dorricott Racing's web site, http://www.dorricottracing.com.
ESPN2 will provide same-day coverage of the Toronto Indy Lights race, Sunday, July 19, from 12:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. ET (9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. PT). The eastern airtime is actually early Monday morning, July 20.
