GUTHRIE MEYER RACING SIGNS IRISHMAN ALI JACKSON FOR 2009 INDY LIGHTS SEASON
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Guthrie Meyer Racing started the new year off by signing Irishman Ali Jackson to drive the No.59 GMR entry for the 2009 Firestone Indy Lights season. Jackson, 19, is a former Asian F3 competitor scoring four wins, and becoming the youngest winner in the series history.
"Ali is an incredible young talent, and I know he's going to be a formidable force on the track this season," said Jim Guthrie, co-owner of GMR. "We are going to give Ali the best possible equipment, surround him with a stellar team and let him do the rest. I'm excited to see him racing in America and that his career goal is the Indianapolis 500 and the IndyCar series."
Jackson tested with GMR in November, and recorded the fastest time on the road course segment, and the second fastest time on the oval portion at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The successful private test led to Jackson joining the newly revamped GMR organization for 2009.
"I'm incredibly happy to be a part of the Guthrie Meyer team," said Jackson. "We had a great test in the fall, and the potential of this team is unmatched. I think we're going to be the team to beat this season."
"Ali's driving ability and chassis feedback is second to none," said Louis "Butch" Meyer III, co-owner of GMR. "He was very impressive at our test in November. GMR is building a championship program, and Ali is definitely going to be an asset to our building process."
Jackson has traveled the world competing in various series' including British F3, but the Indy Lights will be his first venture into American open-wheel racing. Jackson's ultimate goal is to win the Indianapolis 500, and the Firestone Indy Lights is the premier development series for future IndyCar Series competitors.
"IndyCar racing is unique because to win you must be competitive on road circuits, but also ovals," said Jackson. "There's no better place to learn and develop for the IndyCar Series than the Indy Lights. I'm excited to compete with some of the best up and coming talent in the world."
Guthrie Meyer Racing is based in Brownsburg, Ind. The team has been competing in the Firestone Indy Lights Series since 2006, and has recorded three race wins and 14 top five finishes.
