INDIANAPOLIS (May 17, 2003) -- The inaugural Freedom 100 for the Infiniti Pro Series started under cloudy skies today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On the 12th lap the skies opened, forcing Indy Racing League officials to halt the race. The race, scheduled for 40 laps, would have been official after completing half the distance.

The race is scheduled to resume at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Polesitter Ed Carpenter led the field into turn one but the yellow was shown before completing the first lap. Matt Beardsley spun in turn three, collecting Thiago Medeiros, and sent both cars into the wall. Except for a small cut on his chin, Beardsley was unhurt. Medeiros was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital where he was treated and released.

Track crews cleared the extensive debris field and the green flag was shown on lap 10.

Craig Dollansky spun in turn two on the restart, bringing the yellow out once again. Dollansky, who was scheduled to travel to Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway to compete in World of Outlaws competition tonight, suffered a fracture of the lower spine. He was admitted to Methodist Hospital for treatment.

Rain halted the race before crews could return the track to green-flag conditions.

Crews waited in the Infiniti Pro Series paddock while track safety crews dried the track. At 4:30 p.m. crews were notified that the track would be ready for a return to racing between 4:45 p.m. and 5 p.m. Cars were transported to the pits just in time for another shower, ending activities for the day.
