Rain forces Freedom 100 to finish Sunday
INDIANAPOLIS, Saturday, May 17, 2003 -- The inaugural Freedom 100 will continue May 18 after the race was stopped after 13 of 40 scheduled laps due to rain May 17 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The IRL Infiniti Pro Series race will resume at 11:15 a.m. (EDT) Sunday. Track-drying attempts were foiled Saturday by a late-afternoon shower, forcing the postponement.
Pole sitter Ed Carpenter led when the race was halted, with Infiniti Pro Series points leader Mark Taylor second.
"It is very frustrating," Carpenter said. "We had a great car and a great weekend going. To start and just run a couple of corners and then have the yellow come out, it just teases you. It is a nice feeling to have a good car under me."
There were two caution periods during the first 12 laps.
On the opening lap, Matt Beardsley, driver of the No. 12 Alpine Bank/Old Republic Land Title Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, did a 180-degree spin in Turn 3 and collided with Thiago Medeiros, driver of the No. 36 Genoa Racing Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone. Both cars made contact with the SAFER Barrier on the outside retaining wall in Turn 3 and were heavily damaged.
Medeiros was released from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in good condition, while Beardsley was in good condition with a small chin laceration after being checked and released from the Clarian Emergency Medical Center in the infield of IMS.
On Lap 11, shortly after the restart, World of Outlaws star Craig Dollansky did a half-spin to the left, slid into the grass between the warm-up lane and the track in Turn 2. His No. 33 VMAC/Karavan Trailers/FattFro Mtrspts. Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone then slid across the track and made contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 2 with the front of the car.
Dollansky suffered a fracture of his lower spine and was admitted to Methodist Hospital for treatment.
In addition to the conclusion of the Freedom 100, Armed Forces Day will take place May 18, which also is Bump Day, the final day of qualifications for the 87th Indianapolis 500.
Any present or past member of the U.S. Armed Forces in uniform will be admitted to the track for free. The Armed Forces also will be honored during a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. (EST, Indy time). The first 3,000 fans to the plaza area receive a free "Art in Motion" Indy 500 die-cast car. "Jackson Pain" will perform on the plaza stage at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
