Prendeville and Scarallo Are Looking for Points In Saturday and Sunday's Liberty Challenge at IMS
INDIANAPOLIS, June 14 - RLR/Andersen Racing drivers Andrew Prendeville of Morristown, N.J. and Joey Scarallo of Smithtown, N.Y. got their first look at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's road course today, and now they're focused on doing everything they can to do well in Saturday and Sunday's Liberty Challenge doubleheader there.
It's an important weekend not only because it gives the Indy Pro Series drivers a chance to race at IMS and in front of a Formula 1 crowd, but also because it's one of four double-race weekends on the 16-race 2007 Indy Pro Series schedule, and many points can be won or lost here.
Prendeville goes into the weekend ninth in the overall standings with his Best Friends Animal Society No. 5, and Scarallo is 13th with his GroupAWheels.com No. 15.
Having a workable set-up as soon as the car is off the transporter will be even more important than usual. There is only one 35-minute practice session at 8:45 a.m. Friday before the 45-minute SWE Pole qualifying session at 4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon. They'll all be trying to beat Graham Rahal's Indy Pro Series qualifying track record of 1:25.5810 (109.580 miles per hour) set last June.
Sandwiched in between those sessions will be a chance for fans to get the Indy Pro Series drivers' autographs from noon to 1 p.m. at the south end of the plaza.
The first 18-lap/46.89-mile/35-minute Liberty Challenge race is slated to start at 3:45 p.m. Saturday on the 2.605-mile, 13-turn road course. The weather forecast is for a hot and humid weekend.
The starting line-up for the first race will be determined by the qualifying session, but the starting line-up for the second race will be the finishing order from the first race with one important exception. The winner of the first race will draw a number at the series transporter 30 minutes after the first race results are posted, and that number will determine how many finishing positions will be inverted for the starting grid for race two. The choices will be zero, four, six or eight.
If it's a high number it should make things even more challenging than the two previous Liberty Challenge races held in the past, when only single races were held. Marco Andretti led every lap from the pole in 2005, and there was only one lead change last year when Alex Lloyd beat Rahal to the checkered by 0.666 of a second.
That second 18-lap race will be held at 8:35 a.m. Sunday morning.
Twenty-five drivers are entered, nine of who competed in this event last year.
Both races will be shown on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. EDT Thursday, June 21.
