Thiago Medeiros earned his fourth Menards Infiniti Pro Series pole position after recording a lap at a blistering 182.386 mph. Qualifying was held after two practice sessions earlier in the day where Medeiros turned the fastest lap at 181.049 mph. Medeiros' closest competitor, Paul Dana, raised a few eyebrows early in qualifying when he assumed the top spot with a lap at 181.179 mph.
Dana's Hemelgarn Johnson drew held their breath as Medeiros took to the 1.3-mile speedway but the suspense didn't last long as Medeiros knocked Dana from the top spot on his first lap. With three cars still to qualify, Medeiros kept his foot firmly planted on the throttle of his Sam Schmidt entry, moving the top speed further from reach of those remaining in the qualifying line.
Medeiros' fourth pole this season is also his fourth consecutive, with poles at Phoenix, Indianapolis and two weeks ago at Kansas. Medeiros also leads the championship by a wide margin after three victories and one second in the four races held this year.
Dana, who will start second, will have to wait until tomorrow to see if he can stop Medeiros' win streak. "If we can get in front, we have a chance to win," said Dana. "this is a real hard track to run behind somebody. We've struggled a bit in traffic, and we've seen (Thiago Medeiros) struggle in traffic this morning. Race pace, we'll have a good, strong car, but we need to figure out how to get in front."
After completing his qualifying run, Dana was confident that he had put in a good lap. "I was happy with our run," said Dana. "The Hemelgarn guys made a bunch of changes to the car from practice to qualifying. It was a bit of a gamble, but they nailed it, and the car was perfect. I thought we had pole, but it didn't hold up."
"After running two-tenths quicker than Dana in practice, I was confident we could get the pole," said Medeiros. "The weather changed a little bit between practice and qualifying and that helped to pick up the speeds. I knew we could maintain our two-tenth (of a second) advantage. I probably could have lifted after my first lap, but I wanted to show everyone that we still had something left in the car. After all, the crew has been working so hard all year."
Leonardo Maia will start third followed by Rolando Quintanilla and Jesse Mason in fifth starting position.
