Foyt wins rain-shortened race at Michigan.
BROOKLYN, Mich., Sunday, July 28, 2002 -- A.J. Foyt IV earned his second Infiniti Pro Series victory of the season July 28 by winning the rain-shortened Michigan Indy 100 at Michigan International Speedway.
The race, scheduled for 50 laps on the 2-mile oval, was halted after 30 laps. Pole sitter Arie Luyendyk Jr. finished second in the No. 5 Luyendyk Racing Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, with USAC short-track standout Ed Carpenter third in the No. 2 Menards/Jack K. Elrod Co/Futaba/Delphi entry.
Foyt, who started second, took the lead for good from Luyendyk in Turn 2 on Lap 26. The caution flag for rain started at the end of that lap, and Foyt cruised the last laps under caution to victory in the No. 14 Harrah's/A.J. Foyt Racing entry.
"Well, obviously we made the right move at the right time," Foyt said. "I'm glad I did. I could tell it was misting a little bit. I didn't even know what lap it was, but I got lucky."
That final move culminated a race that featured five swaps for the lead between Foyt and Luyendyk between Laps 6 and 26.
"Unfortunately, they threw the yellow about one-eighth of a lap too late," Luyendyk said. "It's OK. We'll get them next race. Congratulations to A.J. It was a fun race out there drafting with everybody. It was a good result for the team."
Foyt, grandson of four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt, regained the series points lead with the victory. He leads second place Cory Witherill, 136-102. Foyt's other victory this season came at the inaugural event of the new Indy Racing League development series July 7 at Kansas Speedway.
Previous points leader Witherill was eliminated from the race with suspension damage on his No. 92 WSA Healthcare entry after an incident with two other cars during the final pace lap. Witherill hit the rear of the No. 12 Alpine Bank Old-Republic Land Title entry driven by Matt Beardsley approaching the green flag and spun into the infield, also causing Mike Koss and Marty Roth to spin.
Witherill was credited with 15th place.
"The whole field started to pick up speed," Witherill said. "Somebody slammed on the brakes in the front, and someone hit me from behind. I started to spin when my left front was hit."
ESPN2 will televise highlights of this race at 6 p.m. (EDT) Aug. 15. The next Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series race is Aug. 11 at Kentucky Speedway.
