CAMARA WINS POLE FOR CLEANEVENT 100
LEBANON, Tenn., Friday, July 15, 2005 -- In SWE Race Car Parts Pole Qualifying for the Menards Infiniti Pro Series, Jaime Camara claimed the pole with a fast lap of 179.062 mph (26.1362 seconds) on the 1.33-mile concrete tri-oval. Travis Gregg, the final driver to make a qualifying attempt, put the No. 7 Lucas Oil Products/Sam Schmidt Motorsports entry alongside his teammate with a lap of 178.864 mph.
It was the eighth time teammates swept the front row in Menards Infiniti Pro Series history, and the 15th pole for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. Series points leader Wade Cunningham (177.858 mph) and Arie Luyendyk Jr. (177.063) will occupy Row 2.
CLEANEVENT 100 POST-QUALIFYING QUOTES:
TRAVIS GREGG (No. 7 Lucas Oil Products/Sam Schmidt Motorsports Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, qualified second): "It was a lot different from what we had in practice, but I knew we would have something a little different with sticker tires and a clean racetrack. (About the concrete surface): "Bumpy. Part of it is car setup. You have to get the ride height right, so you don't bottom out. Once you do that, it still bumps you around. You have to hang on and get used to it."
JAIME CAMARA (No. 1 CELG-Sam Schmidt Motorsports Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, won SWE Race Car Parts Pole Award): "It was close, but that means we have a good car for tomorrow. They just told me that in the last two years, the pole sitter won the race, so I will try my best tomorrow to lead every lap and win the race. I screwed up really bad in (Turns) 1 and 2, and I thought I wasn't going to get pole because of that. That means we're fast, and we'll be faster tomorrow. So it's going to be good tomorrow." (About the concrete surface): "At the exit to Turn 2, it's a little bit bumpy, and the bumps try to throw you out to the outside. You have to turn it back because of the wall. It's a little tricky. I feel like I have more grip than on the other tracks. You have to do the right line here, or you will have problems." (About advice from Tony Kanaan): "It helps all the time. He knows every track really well. That can help me because he knows where the problems are and what I can do to avoid it. That's a good thing. It's better for me because I didn't know what to expect here, even though I practiced here two weeks ago. Track conditions changed a lot. He told me some things that really helped."
WADE CUNNINGHAM (No. 33 Motorsport New Zealand Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, qualified third): "We're a little bit disappointed with the speed in the car. We worked harder in the last session and we expect to be there tomorrow."
JERRY COONS JR. (No. 91 Hemelgarn Johnson Motorsports Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone, qualified 10th for Menards Infiniti Pro Series debut): "I think it went OK. We'd like to sit a little higher qualifying, but the guys did a real good job. A little bit of it is my feedback right now, learning the car, learning what to tell them. They're just so different from what I'm used to. So far I think we've gotten some good laps. We're just going to get faster and faster the more laps I go. It's going to take me the first half of the race, if not more, to get used to being around other cars. It's a whole different ballgame when you're behind other cars. I'm just going to have to settle in and learn. Once I do that, maybe I can try to make some passes and that sort of thing."
