Infiniti Pro Series teams to contend for $100,000 per race.

INDIANAPOLIS, Saturday, May 25, 2002 -- Drivers and teams participating in the new Indy Racing Infiniti Pro Series will compete for a total of $100,000 in prize money per event, series officials announced May 25.

The winner of each Infiniti Pro Series race will receive $25,000, with second- and third-place finishers awarded $14,500 and $10,000, respectively. Fourth through 20th-place finishers will also receive a share of the prize fund.

"I'm very encouraged that we are able to offer this kind of generous prize fund for the first season of the new series," said Roger Bailey, executive director of the Infiniti Pro Series. "Moreover, when 20 teams have the opportunity to share the prize money, the entire series benefits."

Participants in the new Indy Racing development series were equally pleased with the announcement of the $100,000 per race prize fund.

"I'm extremely happy with the purse structure, with a good chunk going to the winner, second and third place receiving a substantial amount, and the payout extending all the way down to 20th place," said Brian Stewart, owner of Brian Stewart Racing, which will campaign driver Marty Roth in the Infiniti Pro Series. "When you run a team, it sure helps when you can get that kind of infusion into your budget."

Similar to Indy Racing League regulations, costs and development for the Infiniti Pro Series will be controlled tightly by the Indy Racing League, with the budget for a full season of competition (12 races) for a single-car team estimated at $750,000.

The inaugural, seven-race season of the new development series will begin July 7 at Kansas Speedway and culminate with the season finale Sept. 14 at Texas Motor Speedway.

The 100-mile Infiniti Pro Series "sprints" will take place at the same track and on the same day as Indy Racing League events except for the Texas race, which will be conducted the day before the IRL's season-ending Chevy 500.

Infiniti Q45 engines will power new Dallara Automobili chassis built for the series, with Firestone Firehawk tires used exclusively on all cars. The V8 engines will produce approximately 450 horsepower for the single-seat winged chassis, providing an ideal training ground for the 650-horsepower, single-seat winged cars of the Indy Racing League.
