BROOKLYN, Mich. (July 19) - - Ideal weather greeted Dorricott Racing's Jason Bright, of Gold Coast, Australia, and teammates Casey Mears and Townsend Bell in their first day of preparing for the Detroit News 100 at Michigan International Speedway. Saturday's Indy Lights race will be round five of the 12-race Dayton Indy Lights Championship. Two practice sessions highlighted Thursday's morning agenda. The first was 45-minutes and started at 9:30 a.m. (ET). A second one-hour practice began at 11:15 a.m. (ET). Clear skies and temperatures in the upper 60s helped Bright, Mears, and Bell each post competitive times that suggested each driver were more than capable of running race winning laps. Bell topped the leader board after 15 minutes of the scheduled 45-minute first session with a fast lap of 0:39.406 = 182.723 mph around Michigan Speedway's two-mile oval. Bright was close behind in second place at 0:39.678 = 181.461 mph. Bright then leaped over Bell to assume the top spot a couple of minutes later with a lap of 0:39.402 = 182.723 mph. Mears stood atop the 18-car field with 20 minutes remaining in the session at 0:38.893 = 186.419. Bell improved his time but remained in second place at 0:38.993 = 184.649 mph. Bright was third in line at 0:39.001 = 184.611 mph. The key to this one-two-three placement was a three-car, nose-to-tail draft that achieved its best lap on the third drafted lap of the exercise. The first practice ended with no incidents and Jeff Simmons, of East Granby, Conn., claiming the fastest lap at 0:38.485 = 187.086 mph. Mears was third fastest at 0:38.735 = 185.878 mph followed closely by Bell at 0:38.858 = 185.290 mph. Bright's time held which placed him sixth. The late morning practice was clean and uneventful other than Mears resurfacing as the fastest Dorricott driver with the second best overall time of 0:38.738 = 185.864 mph. Mears was only 0.214-seconds off Ireland's Jonny Kane's session best of 0:38.524 = 186.896 mph. Bright was the fastest Indy Lights rookie and fifth fastest overall in Session Two at 0:38.907 = 185.057 mph. Bell was Bright's trackside shadow at 0:39.00 = 184.615 mph for sixth fastest overall. k
