Kaiser dominates Indy Lights in Phoenix

From pole position, Juncos Racing's Kyle Kaiser was never troubled on the way to his first win of the season, and the lead of the championship.

Fellow front-row starter Ed Jones of Carlin Racing was rarely more than 1.5sec behind, but rarely closer than one second off the back of his rival, except during the race’s only yellow-flag period, caused by a spin by backmarker Heamin Choi.

Kaiser also set the fastest lap of the race, a 163.128mph ( 22.5541sec) tour of the 1.022-mile oval on lap 3.

At the end of the 90 lap event, the gap between the leaders was one 1.1sec, but another 10 laps could have changed the order behind Kaiser. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ RC Enerson was just 0.2sec off Jones, while Santiago Urrutia was pressing his SPM teammate for third.

Dean Stoneman’s first oval race ended with a satisfying fifth, having started ninth. The Andretti Autosport driver was experimenting with different lines throughout, as he worked his way forward, and his constant pressure on SPM’s Andre Negrao paid off as he muscled past in the final quarter of the race.

Behind Negrao, erstwhile championship leader Felix Serralles (Carlin) was seventh, while the other St. Petersburg winner, Felix Rosenqvist of Belardi Auto Racing, was a desultory 15th.

In stark contrast, Rosenqvist’s teammate Zach Veach made his way forward. The American was forced to start from the back of the 16-car field, as a crash in practice obliged him to miss qualifying. However, his start and restarts were impeccable and he also made a couple of brave passes to take eighth.
