Kane Vancouver provisional qualifying

Vancouver, Canada (Sept 1st, 2000) Ulsterman Jonny Kane was hampered by problems in today's first qualifying for the Molson Indy Lights race at Vancouver this weekend. He came away with ninth place on a time of 1:10.761 seconds.

The session opened with a red flag after only one lap, when Rudolfo Lavin spun into the wall. This caused the session to be shortened by ten minutes. Eventually the field managed to get running when Kane incurred a drive through penalty for a track line infringement. Minutes later the rain arrived and this saw most drivers sit out the remainder of the session.

With only around seven minutes of dry running Kane had been able to qualify third. However at the end of the session his time was disallowed due to the earlier infringement. Championship leader Scott Dixon took the provisional pole with a time of 1:08.697 seconds. Second went to Jeff Simmons (1:08.762 seconds) with Mario Dominguez third (1:09.535 seconds).

Kane will be hoping for a dry qualifying session tomorrow to optimise race advantage for Sunday's 75-mile race at the Vancouver street circuit.

"I think we have a good chance of pole position tomorrow. I made a mistake and put four wheels over a yellow line, which we are not allowed to do because it is our pit lane exit, which is different to the champ cars. Unfortunately that caused us to get a drive through penalty and that is when all the quick times were done as it rained after that.

I can only compare myself to Jeff, my teammate, who is second. Halfway round the lap I am two tenths quicker than him so I think we have a good shot for tomorrow as along as the weather goes with us."
