VISION RACING AND BHA EARN 4TH & 6TH PLACE FINISHES AT KENTUCKY
SPARTA, Kentucky (August 1,2009) - In a race bookended by yellow flags at Kentucky Speedway Saturday evening, Vision Racing and Bryan Herta Autosport drivers James Davison and Daniel Herrington finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Firestone Indy Lights 100th event, the Kentucky 100.
The grid for this evening's race was set by entrant points as on-track moisture in the form of "weepers" canceled track activity, including qualifying, on Friday. That put Davison and Herrington in the sixth and seventh positions at the drop of the green flag which only lasted for a few brief moments as the caution yellow flag came out on the first lap due to a turn three incident.
At the lap seven restart, Davison was in fifth and Herrington in seventh. The pair battled it out all race long in the lead pack with Davison in the No. 21 People's Liberation Dallara/Firestone machine driving as high as fourth and Herrington in the No. 28 Le Bleu car running up to sixth which is where they would both finish under caution.
On lap 64, competitor James Hinchcliffe lost control of his car in turn two, but managed not to make contact with anything or anyone. The race underwent caution and an attempt was made to restart on the final lap, but the field was not able to get into formation in time and the restart was waived off. Wade Cunningham of Sam Schmidt Motorsports took the checkered as leader with Sebastian Saavedra and Ana Beatriz rounding out the podium.
Davison added another solid finish at Kentucky to his resume after finishing second on the 1.5-mile oval last year. He remains sixth in the Firestone Indy Lights championship point standings with 288 points (97 points behind the leader). Davison is most certainly looking forward to the next weekend's race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course where he scored his first victory last season driving for Sam Schmidt Motorsports.
Like Davison, Herrington also added to his season-long streak of just one finish outside of the top-ten this evening. Herrington also earned his best finish at Kentucky Speedway in his second start at the track. He remains in seventh in the championship point standings with 268 points (117 behind the leaders.)
Herrington has two previous attempts at next week's circuit, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with a best finish of 15th. He'll certainly be looking to build upon that as BHA makes their debut on the natural-terrain road course.
James Davison - No. 21 People's Liberation/Vision Racing
"It was a really exciting race with some of the best closest racing that
I have been involved in. I'm really happy with the team's performance.
This is a big development for the No. 21 People's Liberation Vision team.
We were generally competitive on the oval with Andretti Green and Sam
Schmidt today even if maybe we were not the fastest car but definitely a
good step in the right direction. Now we'll focus on the next two road
course where I'm really working to get into victory lane."
Daniel Herrington - No. 28 Le Bleu/BHA Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It wasn't too bad a run but with qualifying cancelled we were a little
disappointed because we feel like we could have qualified a little higher
up and that could have helped us. We really needed all of that practice
to get the car where we needed it and ended up with a pretty comfortable
racecar. We stayed with the lead pack for the most part, but we lacked a
little bit of pace to get by some people and move up to the front. We
definitely hung with them the whole way. It's encouraging after a few
back to back frustrating weekends. To get back on an oval and run with
the leaders feels pretty good and hopefully we can keep the momentum
going."
