Pippa Mann will start from the pole position for the second time this season after averaging 190.474 mph for two laps around the 1.48-mile Kentucky Speedway. "We didn't seem to think that we were that quick but we've been on the front row for three out of the four oval races this year."
Mann said she used information gained from her Sam Schmidt Motorsports teammates to make her car better for qualifying. "I was able to use my in-car tools, so huge thank you goes out to my guys and JK Vernay and Philip Major."
Andretti Autosport drivers Martin Plowman and Charlie Kimball thought they had they had swept the front row but Plowman ended up missing Mann's mark by 0.0485 of a second. Plowman will start second, his ninth top five start of the season while Kimball will start third.
"In the morning warm-up we were focusing on qualifying trim and trying to get a decent starting place," said Plowman. "We just missed out on the pole. As we saw last weekend, getting the pole doesn't mean a whole lot. It's nice to start up there, but come the race time anything can happen. We really have to focus on getting a car that's good in traffic and dirty air on the high-line and low-line."
Series points leader J.K. Vernay, who can clinch the championship by finishing third or better, will start fourth.
Dan Clarke will start on the inside of the third row with James Hinchcliffe lining up on the outside. Hinchcliffe, the only driver with a mathematical chance to win the championship, trails Vernay 53 points.
Vernay can clinch the championship by finishing ahead of Hinchcliffe.
Three drivers did not set qualifying times. Philip Major spun exiting the pits, Gustavo Yacaman pulled into the pits after slowing on the backstretch and Sebastian Saavedra missed practice and qualifying after suffering technical problems. All three drivers will start at the back of the grid.
