Mario Domínguez Faces Mid-Ohio
Mexican driver Mario Domínguez, flew to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, to face the eight round of the 2001 Dayton Indy Lights series which will be run next Sunday, August 12th. Mario is the driver of car #17 Del Valle-Corona-Televisa, belonging to the PacWest Lights team, current Indy Lights champions. The mexican driver is fourth in the 2001 standings and hopes to use his knowledge of the Mid-Ohio track to get a good place in the grid and get his first win of the season.
Mario ran previously in this track in the 2000 Indy Lights championship. He qualified 11th, the best of 5 mexican drivers in practice. In the race, Mario was always in the leading group and ended in the same place where he started, some 13 seconds from the winner. This year, Mario has run two circuits, Monterrey and Portland, and started both of them among the top 5 and ended in the points both times, getting a fourth in Monterrey, México, where he also had the race's fastest lap. In his three years in Indy Lights, the PacWest Lights driver has run 11 rounds in permanent circuits and has scored points in 8 of them (73%). Mario has points in all the 2001 races (100%) and has scored in 19 of his last 20 races in the series (95%), showing great consistence in a most competitive series. This year, Mario has two PPs and has not started beyond the third row all season long. In his 11 races in Indy Lights' permanent circuits, his best starting position is the fourth place he got at Monterrey 2001.
Before leaving Mexico City for Mid Ohio -where he already practiced this season and he was one of the top 4 drivers in an official testing season- Mario talked about the challenge of Mid-Ohio: "It's a very interesting, nice and not-at-all easy track. The Del Valle-Corona-Televisa-PacWest Lights team is prepared to keep the good showing we've had during 2001 and hopefully fight for the win so we can close on the series leaders. We have a good basic set-up and we know the circuit, both things should help to get a good result. This is the year of fulfilling all promises because in 2002 we have to be in CART and it would be the best thing if we could arrive there being Indy Lights champions, but that will come with the results we can get in these final five races of the year".
The picture is Mario Domínguez in the Kansas oval where he had his second pole position of the year and led the first third of the race until an engine problem forced him to retire.
