BROOKLYN, MI., (July 21, 2000) - After having been at the top of the timesheets in practice, Team KOOL Green’s Jonny Kane and Jeff Simmons fell off the pace a little in qualifying. Simmons had been the quickest of all the drivers in practice, but could only manage the 12th best lap in single-car qualifying as the last car to post a time. He lapped the 2-mile oval in 39.957 seconds (180.194 mph), while his teammate Jonny Kane was seventh with a lap of 39.611 seconds (181.768 mph).

Felipe Giaffone took the pole position for tomorrow’s 50-lap race, qualifying with a run of 39.287 seconds (183.267 mph). Giaffone will share the front row with Chris Menninga, who turned a lap of 39.383 seconds (183.192 mph). Tony Renna will start third after a lap of 39.451 seconds (182.505 mph).

Tomorrow’s Indy Lights race will begin at 4:15 p.m. Eastern Time, while the race broadcast will be shown on ESPN2 this Sunday (July 23rd) at 6:00 p.m.

JEFF SIMMONS, #26 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20:
(12th with a lap-time of 39.957 seconds at 180.194 mph)

“That’s as fast as it would go. We were flat all the way around and I drove the line the way that has worked all weekend. We made some changes to the KOOL car yesterday and picked up some time. But I could tell that we were not picking up any speed coming down the straightaways (on qualifying run). It seemed a bit gusty out there. Obviously we showed in practice that I can set up good runs and that I can draft really well in the pack. I still think we can win the race, which may seem like a bold statement when you’re more than half-second off the pole. If I’m real smart, and don’t make any bad moves in traffic, I should be able to move to the front and hopefully win.”

JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20:
(7th with a lap-time of 39.611 seconds at 181.768 mph)

“I don’t know what happened. I would have thought that we would have been quicker than that. It seems like that’s all there was in the KOOL car. We’ve been quicker than that running by ourselves this weekend, so it’s puzzling. I thought we were one of the quickest cars by ourselves. The car felt fine and I was flat-out all the way around. Thankfully, starting position is not crucial here. It’s a little disappointing after we won the pole for both superspeedway events last season. But it’s a long race and I’m confident that we’ll finish higher up than where we start.”
