KANE FINISHES SEVENTH IN THE DETROIT NEWS 100 AT MICHIGAN SPEEDWAY
PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship - RACE Round 8 of 12
BROOKLYN, Mich., - Team KOOL Green's Jonny Kane finished seventh in today's running of the Detroit News 100, Round 8 of the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship. Philipp Peter won the race by a slim 0.002 seconds over runner-up Casey Mears with Felipe Giaffone taking third.
Kane started on the pole in his first superspeedway race, but fell back to fifth on the opening lap of the race. He was caught on the inside as a large train of cars drafted together on the outside. After four laps Kane was running in 11th place. He then fought hard for every position he made back. In the dash for the checkered, Kane crossed the finish line in seventh.
Oriol Servia, who was fifth today, still leads the overall championship with 95 points. A single point separates Servia's teammates, as Mears holds an 88-87 advantage over Peter. Kane moves up one from 12th to 11th with 36 points, just 10 behind rookie points leader Mario Dominguez with 46.
JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20: (Started 1st / Finished 7th ; Currently 11th in the standings with 36 points)
"It's very different racing on the superspeedway. I kind of got caught out on the start when a big train got going. I lost quite a few positions. And then, a tire blew out in front of me (Airton Dare's tire) and that cost me a couple more spots.
"Other than that, I was just sticking in with the train most of the race. I was trying to keep my position. At the end, I thought I made a good move when some guys went to the inside. I followed them, but the cars on the outside had more momentum.
"One car by itself can't compete with seven drafting in a row. So, most of the passing was to the outside with the train. But hey, we got the Team KOOL Green car to the finish in our first go here. We won the pole, so I think we proved we're quick here. It was a good lesson that will serve us well in Fontana."
BARRY GREEN, Owner of Team KOOL Green:
"It's a very different race than what Jonny is used to. I think he did a
pretty good job. He got snookered at the start and got pushed right to the
back when he got caught low. He worked pretty hard to get back where he
finished. I think he learned something from this and he'll be ready for the
next one like this. He proved that he's fast with a tremendous job in
qualifying. I think he'll be keen to get to Fontana and try his luck there.
