Schmidt Peterson signs Pro Mazda champ Urrutia
Santiago Urrutia will graduate to Indy Lights to join RC Enerson in the lineup at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.
Motorsport.com has learned that the Uruguayan, who is testing with Schmidt Peterson on Miami Homestead’s road course today and tomorrow, has inked a deal with the Indy Lights team that has produced seven champions in the last 12 years.
Urrutia scored three wins and seven other podium finishes for Team Pelfrey on his way to the 2015 Pro Mazda title, which earned him a scholarship of $590,300.
He will join sophomore Lights driver Enerson, who finished fourth for Schmidt Peterson last year after taking a win at Mid-Ohio.
James French, who tested for Schmidt at Circuit of The Americas last November, is thought unlikely to do a full season but is a strong possibility in a part-time role.
However, contrary to earlier expectations, 2015 Schmidt driver Ethan Ringel is unlikely to return.
Eleven cars took part in today’s test which saw Ed Jones top the timesheets for Carlin Racing, with Felix Rosenqvist making an immediate impression for Belardi.
Urrutia was fifth, less than 0.2sec slower than teammate Enerson.
