(Milwaukee, Wi) – PacWest Racing’s Scott Dixon claimed his second Indy Lights pole in qualifying for the second round of the Dayton Indy Lights Championship at the Milwaukee Mile in Wisconsin today.
The young New Zealander showed all the “cool” of a seasoned professional in his #17 Invensys-Powerware machine to clock a time of 23.975 seconds around North America’s oldest speedway.
Dixon won at Chicago from the pole in his rookie season last year and is the current leader of the Dayton Indy Lights series after winning race one at Long Beach on April 16.
Dixon’s teammate, Tony Renna, made some major improvements to his car overnight and will start on the second row for tomorrow’s race in his #18 Motorola PacWest Lights entry.
Renna started second at Milwaukee last year and led 38 laps before eventually finishing third in his first start for PacWest.
TOP 5: Scott Dixon (23.975s) 1; Jason Bright (24.058s) 2; Casey Mears (24.085s) 3; Tony Renna (24.164s) 4; Mario Dominguez (24.172s) 5.
SCOTT DIXON – #17 INVENSYS-POWERWARE PACWEST LIGHTS – 1st
Morning Session: 23.882s; Qualifying: 23.975s
“The car was left pretty much the same from the morning practice session,” said Dixon
“On the last lap I got a little loose in (turns) three and four – I was certainly on the limit and I don’t think I could have gotten any more out of it.
“It is important to start from the front here, especially with the high downforce.
“It is certainly going to be hard to pass once the race gets going.
“You can’t get close to the car in front because of the high downforce – any passing is going to require a pretty brave move.
“While saying that, lapped traffic is certainly going to play a role in the outcome because if you loose any momentum at all it takes a long time to get back up to race speed.”
TONY RENNA – # 18 MOTOROLA PACWEST LIGHTS – 4th
Morning Session: 23.973s – 3rd; Qualifying: 24.164s
“I think we are in a good position to run a strong and consistent race,” said Renna.
“We have a very well balanced car and need to ensure we get a good clean start.
“It is great that Scott (Dixon) is on the pole and hopefully I can get up there and race him to the checkered flag.
“A PacWest 1-2 is what we are here for and I think with a little luck we can achieve just that."
