IROC NOTES FOR MONDAY, FEB. 12, 1996
TRUE VALUE HARDWARE STORES PRESENTS FIREBIRD IROC XX NOTES (from Michael Knight)
Friday's 1:30 p.m. True Value Firebird IROC race at Daytona marks the beginning of the 20th anniversary season of IROC competiion. It also will be the first race for the Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am in IROC. Previous IROC cars of choice: Porsche Carrera RSR, 1974-75; Chevrolet Camaro, 1975-80 and 1984-89; Dodge Daytona, 1990-93; Dodge Avenger, 1994-95.
JIM SAUTER (test driver for IROC) -- One goal in preparing the cars is making them comfortable for non-stock car drivers. I think we've done that with the Firebird. These cars work good in the draft and that makes for a great race. (As for the main improvement in the new chassis) Tire technology had overtaken the rear-steer car. We have a great radial tire from Goodyear and the front-steer car is what you need to work with the radial tire.
ROBBY GORDON -- (with two Indy Car wins in 1995, has been practicing every day since Friday. He got an "education" early, running with Dale Earnhardt Friday and Rusty Wallace Sunday) This is a lot of fun. (who finshed fifth in 1995 PPG Cup points) I saw some of Dale and Rusty's moves and that helped. I'm learning how to work the draft, how to pass, when and where to pass. I'm planning to be here all week and practice every day. I want to have as much time as I can in the car before the race on Friday. I'm excited to be here. I've wanted to be in IROC for a long time and I want to do well.
JAY SIGNORE -- (president of IROC, has the feel of a proud new father as the days roll down to the start of IROC's 20th anniversary season) You look at the cars. They are all brand new from the ground up and you have that little squirmy feeling in your stomach. The new cars are all dialed-in nicely. When you get a driver like Rusty Wallace to spend an hour on track and play like he did then you know you've got a good package. We've had almost everybody in the cars already. Johnny Benson ran a lot of practice because he wants to get more familiar with the car. Mark Martin and Terry Labonte haven't been in the car yet. 'Little Al' (Unser) and Tommy Kendall will be in Tuesday and Scott Pruett gets here Wednesday.
