IROC Opens Pre-season Test Schedule At Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (11-25-96) -- The annual three-day test session in late November of the True Value Firebird IROC cars kicked-off an intense two months of pre-season stock car, sports car and motorcycle testing at Daytona International Speedway. Thirty days of testing in December and January sandwich the annual five-day "Kart Week" races Dec. 26-30 and prepare competitors for Speedweeks 1997, Jan. 30-Feb. 16; and 1997 Daytona 200 Week, Feb. 27-March 9. December has motorcycle tire testing and a three-day session for ARCA stock cars and January is devoted to NASCAR stock cars and IMSA sports cars. International Race of Champions (IROC) President Jay Signore accompanied test drivers Dave Marcis, Jim Sauter and Dick Trickle at the November test, preparing for the Feb. 14 season-opener for IROC XXI, and the team made a unique discovery in an environment that is usually geared to finding more speed. "Basically, we slowed the cars down five or six mph, and we found they pulled-up better in the draft and the tire performance was better," said Signore. "We switched to a smaller 390 cfm carburetor, a different air intake system and we made some small aerodynamic adjustments." "We made the cars a lot more comfortable to drive and better in the draft, which is a key to our races," said Sauter. "We probably improved them by 70 percent." "I think the drivers will be happy with them," said Marcis, who has tested IROC cars for 20 years and who was responsible for bringing his fellow Wisconsin drivers into the test program. "The cars draft better and that will make for much better racing." General admission grandstand tickets for the Feb. 14 True Value Firebird IROC XXI opener and Discount Auto Parts 200 NASCAR Goody's Dash Series race are $30 and will be available on race day. To order tickets for any Daytona event, call the Speedway Ticket Office at (904) 253-7223.
