1998 Formula A Australian Champion Ryan Wlodzinski (Energy) has struck form early in the 2000 APS Racing Series at Adelaide's Bolivar circuit with two wins from two heats in the cool and overcast conditions.
Wlodzinski qualified on position four behind pole-sitter Michael Caruso (Tony Kart), Brendan Dive (Haase) and Chris Cox (Italcorse) but leapt to the lead in both qualifying heats with relative ease. The man who many believe will actually win the 2000 Pettaras Press Formula A class, 1998 Junior Intercontinental A and 1998 Intercontinental A Champion Neil McFadyen qualified two spots behind Wlodzinski and finished the day with a seventh and fourth placed finish. Six tenths of a second covers the entire field with reigning Formula A Champion Jamie Whincup (Tecno) was surprisingly off the pace. Although only a quarter of a second off the pace, Whincup was off grid 13 for each heat race, finishing well behind the leaders. Look for an improvement from him in the finals, a lack of laps in pre-season testing cited as the reason for his lack of speed.
Speed was one thing that Queensland's Barclay Holden (Azzurro) had absolutely no lack of in the McPherson Media supported Intercontinental A class, taking two strong heat wins and a third whilst conserving rubber. Talented New Zealand teenager Jonathon Reid (Kosmic) was also on the money, pole-sitter Newcastle's Brendan May (Mike Wilson) with a new team also taking a win. The Intercontinental A top qualifier actually out-qualifying the Formula A class.
The tyre war continued with recently graduated junior Regan Payne qualifying second behind fellow Dunlop runner May. Bridgestone's Adam Klunyk (Arrow) was third fastest, the former local subbing for Bart Price after a dramatic testing accident a week prior to the event saw Price sidelined with a broken collarbone. The Vega tyres fightback continued in Junior Intercontinental A with a new face stealing all the limelight. Andrew Thompson was the pace from the minute he arrived at the circuit, the recently graduated Rookie driver qualifying second behind newly crowned Australian Junior Piston Port Champion Ryal Harris (Azzurro). The two Queenslander's lead local driver Tim Slade (Top Kart) and another debutante Shane Price (Arrow). 1999 Bolivar winner Geoffrey Grant qualified a disappointing eighth with last year's runner-up Jace Lindstrom (Arrow) sixth.
The third and final heats run tomorrow morning with the pre-finals then finals completed tomorrow afternoon. With conditions expected to improve to the high teens tomorrow, more rubber is likley to go down on the circuit again changing setups that have been developed for the cooler conditions. All in all a recipe for some very interesting outcomes.
