AUSTRALIA'S BEST KARTERS GETTING SET FOR VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kart racers from all across the country are preparing themselves for the first blue ribbon Event of 2009, the Victorian Open Sprint Kart Championships, to be held at the Hume International Raceway in Puckapunyal next month (February 13-15).

With over 400 drivers entered across the 16 categories, drivers aged as young as seven and as experienced as 50 years old will be competing at approximately 100 km/h around the 1064-metre circuit

One of the largest fields at next month's Event is the Junior National Light category where in excess of 40 drivers, including four females, will be competing for the honour of becoming the Victorian Champion for 2009.

This category is certain to create some spectacular racing with the youngsters, aged between 11 and 15, racing within centimetres of each other.

In the senior ranks, names such as defending Victorian Champions Matthew Wall (Clubman Heavy), Jason Stania (Clubman Super Heavy), Remo Luciani (Clubman Over 40s) and Rick Pringle (Rotax Heavy) are expected to figure prominently.

There are also numerous current or former National Champions throughout the long list of entries including New South Wales drivers Matthew Waters and Shayne Piper, Melbourne's Bart Price and David Sera along with Queenslander Scott Simpson.

David Murray, President of the Victorian Karting Association, is delighted with the large number of entries received for the Event.

"It is great to see so many people coming from all across Australia to compete at the Victorian Championships, we've got drivers from every State with the exception of the Northern Territory coming to compete," said Murray.

"The Victorian Championships is regarded as one of the toughest Events to win on the Australian karting calendar and seeing so many talented young, and not so young, drivers on the entry list is very pleasing.

"This Event will be used by many competitors as a familiarisation Event in the lead next year's Nationals Championships which will be hosted by the Eastern Lions Kart Club at the venue."

The Hume International Raceway is one of the best karting circuits in the country. In 2004 it hosted to the National Championships and is the venue where drivers such as current V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup learnt their craft.

Qualifying will be held on Friday February 13 with heat races to be contested on Saturday February 14 followed by the Championship Finals on Sunday February 15.

ABOUT KARTING Karting is a sport for people of all ages - from as young as seven to over 70 years old, everyone can enjoy it!

With children racing at speeds up to 80km/h it is a sport that teaches these kids, both boys and girls, basic driving skills well before they are able to obtain their road licence.

There is no doubt karting is competitive but it is also fun and family orientated, with involvement in the sport both on and off the track giving it a strong feeling of community. It teaches driving skills and offers people an opportunity to gain a career in motorsport, all in a safe and organised environment.

Kart meetings take place at circuits across Australia every weekend and are either a club, regional, state or national level meeting. There are 92 clubs across Australia affiliated with the Australian Karting Association.

These clubs are mainly sprint kart clubs which race on bitumen circuits however, some regions also have dirt and speedway tracks which drivers can race at. An alternative to the traditional style of karting is a recent addition to Australian circuits, endurance karting.
