Lacroix: second, after all!
Terrebonne, Quebec, July 12. -- Although he experienced mechanical problems all day long, Kevin Lacroix still managed to hold his ground and finish second behind eventual winner David Michaud. Entered in the third round of the Quebec karting championship with the intention of preparing his material for the next round of the Italian Open Masters next week, Lacroix was plagued with overheating problems that prevented him from reaching top speed on this very fast race track. Nonetheless, the St-Eustache, Quebec driver was happy with his performance that proved very useful in terms of testing.
"We decided to test a new engine and different fuelling systems through this round, admits the 15 year-old driver. But a hairline crack developed on the head cylinder in the pre-final after extensive heating in the qualifying session and I could not use the engine to its limit. I was lacking top speed in the main stretch and I could not pass David (Michaud). I decided to wisely stay behind, finish in second place, get more data about the weak engine instead of dropping the piston and be sidelined."
Overheating problems
The engine started to overheat in the early stage of the qualifying session. Temperature was above the critical 220 degrees F point and the little banger just couldn't push the machine to its usual top speed and Kevin did not register the best time. "Our strategy for this outing was to test different fuelling setups, follows Kevin. The testing turned sour when we noticed the cracked head. We lost some coolant and the engine was very hot. I decided to come home in second and see how the hot engine would make it through the day. On the other hand, not to take any credit away from David, he was very fast today."
Off to Jesolo in Italy
Kevin and his team will fly back to Europe where the last round of the Italian Open Masters will be staged in Jesolo, in Northern Italy. This championship has been a tremendous learning curve for Kevin. He will try to finish in the Top Ten for this last outing.
