Elliot breaks away in Formula A

4 May, 2003 - In his Dunlop CIK Championship debut with the Pieper Motorsport Birel Australia team West Australian Daniel Elliott delivered when it counted in Formula A today.

After finishing fifth in the Pre-Final that was taken out by Championship leader Jason Hryniuk in his Rainer and Leech CRG Elliot made the moves in the early laps of the 39-lap Final.

In the Pre-Final Barclay Holden showed the best pace of the weekend in his Trulli as Richard McLeod also began to show his true pace setting the fastest lap of the race.

Starting from the inside third row Elliot was the big mover into the opening turn of the Final and began to assert his dominance from the outset.

While Holden, Mcleod, Hryniuk and JT Team Arrow driver, Matthew Wall battled amongst themself Elliot began to clear away from the pack.

Meanwhile Andrew Tomlinson was on charge from the back of the pack after failing to finish the Pre-Final and made it a five way battle for the minors.

Shortly after McLeod dropped off the pace when he lost bottom end power aboard his Azzurro kart.

Elliot cleared off into the distance while Tomlinson began to assert himself on second place leaving Hryniuk to hold on to third place.

Taking the win for a jubilant Birel team Elliott crossed the line just over 3 seconds clear of Tomlinson who was a similar distance back to Hryniuk. Holden finished an improved fourth place ahead of Wall and Burns who made his way from the final row of the grid.

Nick Lowe made it two from two for the Birel Australia team when he won the Intercontinental A class in a hard fought affair.

After taking the victory in the Pre-Final Troy Woodger led the way in the opening laps of the Final for MW & TW Home Renovations.

New Zealand driver, Mitchell Cunningham and Lowe hounded the rear bumper of Woodger's Trulli kart for several laps before Lowe found his way into the race lead.

From this point on Lowe began to distance himself from the duo and all eyes were on round one victor Glenn Powles who was charging his way through the pack after having a disappointing finish in the Pre-Final due to severe tyre wear.

The Birel driver held strong to maintain control and take the win ahead of Powles while Woodger held on for third ahead of Matthew Muller in his PCR and the hard charging John Martin in a Trulli Kart.

JT Team Arrow's William Yarwood proved too good in Intercontinental C to take the win ahead of Omega pilot Tyson Pearce and Justin Ruggier.

The leading trio were upstaged at the start by Queensland driver Blake Varney got a blistering start to lead the opening lap. Unfortunately for Varney his glory was short lived when he broke a reed pedal and he dropped back through the pack.

Kristian Lindbom was the dominant force remaining undefeated throughout the weekend to take out Junior Intercontinental A in his Bass Player supported Top Kart.

JT Team Arrow driver, Paul Laskazeski was within striking distance during the early laps but Lindbom simply proved too good to take the win. Laskazeski claimed second ahead of CIK debutant local driver Josh Tynan.

Tynan contended with fellow local driver Mason Merritt in his Omega during the opening laps but Merritt suffered overheating tyres to drop down the order.
