PLOWMAN BACK ON SONG
Team Zanardi's Martin Plowman proved he's returned to full form by finishing second in round three of the French Open International Karting Championships at Ostricourt on Sunday 22 May, making it a British one/two with Jon Lancaster taking the win.
In only his second race back after suffering a punctured lung at the first round of the Italian Championships at Lonato in March, the Staffordshire teenager qualified 12th overall, which helped him notch up 11th and fifth place finishes in the heats.
The BRDC Rising Star started well from grid five for the Pre Final, managing to take second by the end of lap one. Struggling slightly with the new tyre compound, due to little testing time, Plowman lost the place to Tony Kart's Paul Louveau (F) by lap three but managed to hold position for the remainder of the race to take third.
A blistering start from third on the grid for the Final saw Plowman storm straight into second spot, with fellow Brit Jon Lancaster (Birel/Tm) pulling out a comfortable lead from the off. With Lancaster clear out in front, Plowman concentrated on defending his position from Frenchman Julien Courtigne (Kosmic/Vortex).
Courtigne pushed Plowman all the way in a thrilling 22-lap dual, but Plowman looked comfortable and never relinquished his second spot from lights to flag. Despite missing the first two rounds of the French Open International Championship, Plowman's form in Ostricourt sees him promoted to 13th overall in the Formula A Championship, with just two rounds to go.
Following the race, Plowman said: "This has been a really positive weekend for us. We started off struggling slightly to find the right chassis set up for the new compound of tyres, but we have found a lot of time here today and I am confident that with more testing time, we will find the optimum set up. Although we have still got a lot to improve on, the main thing is that we have taken good points home and now have a respectable standing in the Championship."
Plowman will rejoin the Italian Open International Championship next weekend, for round three at Muro Leccese.
