Colin Braun Competes In His First PRI/CKI All-Star Karting Classic
ORLANDO, Florida (Saturday, December 12, 2009) - NASCAR driver Colin Braun competed against some of the best in motorsports in Thursday's PRI/CKI All-Star Karting Classic at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The event, held in conjunction with the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show, was the 21-year-old's first kart race in seven years.
Now in its 4th year, the PRI/CKI All-Star Karting Classic entry list is a diverse lineup of NASCAR, NHRA, IRL, ALMS, ARCA, Grand-Am, and kart drivers. Driving for SCC East in a CRG chassis, the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie-of-the-Year teamed up with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jamie McMurray, F1 driver Tonio Liuzzi, and karting star Gary Carlton, racing against the talents of Buddy Rice, Scott Speed, AJ Allmendinger, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alex Tagliani, and others.
Rain allowed only 15 minutes of practice for Braun's group at the specially configured 0.5-mile road course, but he was still able to lay down a 15.454 second lap in qualifying, good enough for 12th on the speed charts. The pre-final qualifying race allowed Braun to pick up three more positions, putting him 9th on the starting grid for the final race.
Fighting a very loose condition in his No. 38 machine during the pre-final, Braun and his team made major adjustments before the green flag waved for the big event. Braun fought his way up to 6th in only four laps before a competitor's hit from behind sent him and the other driver spinning. The tangle stalled the No. 38 and Braun lost a lap, but once he re-fired he continued to run with the leaders.
Ten laps later a massive pileup in front of him left Braun with nowhere to go on the tight, 9-turn track, and he collided with the pack. The wreck took Braun and several others out of the race after completing only 16 of 40 laps, and the DNF relegated him to a 22nd place finish. Braun's teammates Liuzzi, Carlton, and McMurray finished 3rd, 5th, and 7th, respectively.
Regardless of the results, Braun, who won many national karting championships early in his career, enjoyed getting back behind the wheel for a major karting event. "I had so much fun today," said Braun. "I really love driving these things and it was a blast to compete in one for the first time in seven years. I have to thank SCC East and CRG, as well as my mechanic Darrick for all the great work he did. This was an awesome event and I'm so glad I came down for it."
Braun, who has competed full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for Roush Fenway Racing the past two seasons, was recently named to pilot Roush's No. 16 Con-Way Freight Ford in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. NNS kicks off its season at Daytona International Speedway on February 13th.
