Toby Rinaldoni, on the podium at age 14
Wampun, Pennsylvania, May 11-- BeaveRun karting Complex near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was the venue for the first round of the Stars of Tomorrow 2004 series, known to be the most competitive in North America. Toby Rinaldoni, the 14 year old driver from Sainte-Catherine, a Montreal south shore suburb, came out shining as he earned third step on the podium after Sunday's final race in the ICA 100 cc class.
A multiple 2003 title holder in the Junior class, Rinaldoni was able to hold off experimented racers like Perri, Willis, Stage and Johnson. "This has to be a dream come true weekend, declared the youngster has he returned from the podium ceremony. Third place is beyond my wildest hopes, especially with a starting grid as competitive as there is in the Stars series. But when I took the track on Friday morning, I knew I was going to perform well all weekend."
Dominant under heavy rain
In the practice sessions on Friday, Rinaldoni showed the way to the field when he recorded times almost 1.5 second faster then the rest of the competitors. ICA class stars a direct chain drive 100cc engine that requires smoothness and dexterity from its driver.
On Saturday, whether it was raining or not, Toby was third fastest in the qualifying round and finished in second in the pre-final race. Unfortunately, in the final, after he started on front row, he dropped to 15th place when he experienced brake problems.
On a roll on Sunday
Disappointed after his Saturday finale, Toby made sure he would not leave USA without good results on Sunday. So he got back to work and performed well again. He ran a solid final race on Sunday and passed the chequered flag in third place, his best finish yet in two years in the Stars series. "From now on, I think I can be a contender in this series, even with the strong opposition, said Rinaldoni. This is the first round of the season and I think we can get stronger."
