Kevin Lacroix: The turning point

St-Eustache, September 18. -- The next races in the Stars of Tomorrow series to be held this weekend at the Jacksonville complex in Florida, will be the season turning point for Kevin Lacroix in his attempt to become the best 80cc Junior kart driver in North America. The 14 year-old driver from St-Eustache, Quebec remains the only Canadian who could earn the most coveted title in this category on the continent. Kevin and Kyle Rahal, 17, have been the only real contenders since the first green flag dropped in Pennsylvania in early May. The championship then moved to Road America, Wisconsin, and Trane, Illinois and will end in California in early November when the series visits Fontana for the Champ Car finale.

" We're in the title race more than ever and I have the feeling the wind has turned when I got my first win in Illinois, admits Kevin. It's the toughest level of competition I ever faced and my team and I have learned a lot since we entered this series. We had to raise our level of preparation and I had to improve my driving style. There are still two rounds (four races) left and I feel winning the championship is possible."

Only 10 points behind in the standings

In the 80 JR class, only Rahal and Lacroix can win the title: they are 10 points apart and each win is worth 25 points. After 6 rounds, the drivers have a 17 point difference, but the rules state that each has to drop his worst two results which narrows the gap to only 10 points. " We learned that the Fontana races will count towards the championship, says Lacroix. This means we have four races left to close the gap on Kyle and take the title. And I think we can make it."

The season turning point

Illinois was the crucial moment in the season when Kevin got his first victory on American ground. He did so only when his CRG machine lost many pounds after a complete revision. " We took a few kilos off the machine and it made a big difference on the track. The engine felt very powerful coming out of the corners and results showed we were in front. Back in the workshop, we continued the operation and shaved ounces here and there. I also worked on my physical fitness and my diet. I think we never have been that fit for racing. All we have left to do now is have fun on the track. "

The Stars of Tomorrow officials have monitored Isabel hurricane over the last days and have decided that the race weekend could be held without any concern for the security of the teams traveling to Jacksonville.

A touch of Europe this Fall

In the next weeks Kevin's team will give confirmation that their driver will participate in a few rounds of the European or Italian Karting Championship. Kevin will get a chance to measure his talent against very competitive international grids and what Europe offers best.

The team behind the driver

Full-time driver for PSL Racing team, Kevin Lacroix is entered in the 2003 international championship " Stars of Tomorrow ", the Coupe du Quebec series and will head for Europe in the Italian Karting championship. He is currently under contract with SKF Motorsports, Raybestos, Tenneco, Pennzoil, Auto Parts Plus, Uni-Select national network and Lacroix Auto Parts.
