Almost a perfect weekend

St-Eustache, September 22. -- Kevin Lacroix, the 14 year-old driver from St-Eustache, Quebec almost realized his goal of winning the 80cc Junior category in the Stars of Tomorrow series this weekend at the Jacksonville complex in Florida, but in the end he came up short by only a few laps. Lacroix dominated outrageously the field with best times in practice and qualifying sessions, a clear win in Saturday final but his dream would fade when he ran by a back markers accident in Sunday final, had to drive over a wet sandy area before coming back on the track, only to slide off the track a few turns later as he was about to loose the lead.

" I'm quite angry with this situation because I was ten laps from the championship, bitterly said Kevin. I had the perfect machine, I was just pacing myself to the chequered flag and then comes this accident on the track. I was the first to drive by and had no way around but on a wet sandy curb. When the other guys came to the spot, one kart had been removed and they stayed on the track. From there, they kept good footing on the track while I was slipping with wet sand all over my tires. I went off the track while I tried to retain the lead."

Fastest from lap one

Setting the pace early Saturday morning, Kevin was fastest in practice session, one of two drivers under 33 seconds. In the pre-final, he lead all 18 laps to win by two seconds while series leader Kyle Rahal was seventh. In the final race, it was wire to wire again and valuable championship points while Rahal was third, some 8 seconds behind. Lacroix repeated his feats on Sunday as he was fastest in the morning warm-up and the only driver under 33 seconds in the qualifying session. The pre-final was cancelled after a torrential rain washed the track. Still he was leading the final when he reached the accident with back markers he was about to lap. Rahal wins the title and Kevin is second.

Fontana now in mind

While Europe is being considered as a possibility for this fall, the team now feels it will concentrate on the grand finale in California in early November. "I was told the Eastern championship is stronger than the Western and I want to get ready for that event in Fontana when we perform on the same weekend as the Champ Car series, said Kevin. At this point, I want to complete this championship on a high note. That would be a nice way to forget this weekend when we came so close!"

The team behind the driver

Full-time driver for PSL Racing team, Kevin Lacroix is entered in the 2003 international championship " Stars of Tomorrow ", the Coupe du Quebec series and will head for Europe in the Italian Karting championship. He is currently under contract with SKF Motorsports, Raybestos, Tenneco, Pennzoil, Auto Parts Plus, Uni-Select national network and Lacroix Auto Parts.
