Stars of Tomorrow Series Best Rookie
Lacroix : First Podium
New Castle, Indiana, July 6. -- Kevin Lacroix was on a lot of people's mind this past weekend, during the second round of the Stars of Tomorrow Series, held in the New Castle complex, near the famous Indianapolis Brickyard. Considered the rookie of the season in this senior class, Kevin got his first podium this past Sunday, after finishing fourth on Saturday in the first heat. According to the experts monitoring this development series, the 15 year-old shows a veteran's nerve on the track, and a fighting spirit to be ahead of the pack.
"I feel more relaxed in the Stars series, says Kevin, because there's less pressure than in the Masters (series) in Europe. Here, the guys ahead are older and more experienced, and they don't make as many dangerous moves. This weekend, I owe a lot to the PSL Karting preparators, and the Maxter engine people, who have done a great job. They fixed problems between the two heats, and today (Sunday), I had a very powerful machine."
Saturday: a long way back to 4th
In ICC class, the toughest competitors in the Stars series have at least three years' experience. Very often, they have raced in open-wheel series and are still trying to get in the big leagues of motorsports. During qualifying, Kevin suffered engine troubles that set him in the back of the grid for the pre-final. But he was able to climb back to 11th place, earning himself a spot on the sixth line for the final. In the final, he just kept on going and barely missed the podium, finishing behind well-known drivers Josh Schreiber, Alex Speed and Jonathan Branham.
Sunday: a first podium !
On Sunday, the rest of the grid got to know Kevin Lacroix and could only admire his driving. He made the second best time in the morning qualifying. In the pre-final, he took the lead on the second lap, but stopped fighting with Speed in order to save his tires. "In this series, he explains, we have to mount the same tires in the pre-final and in the final. I decided to save my tires for the final, instead of trying to pass Speed for the win."
Starting second in the final, he was also second to cross the finish line, only to be reseeded third later. Results are provisional, pending on stewards' decisions. There were no podium ceremony. Kevin might be positioned back to second place. "This time, I have to thank my sponsors and my preparators, said the young driver from Saint-Eustache, Quebec. Without them, I could never race in this season's schedule, moving back and forth between Europe and the United States." Lacroix's next outing will be in Italy at the Pista Azzura in Jesolo in two weeks time.
